About the ASSC

The Alberta Services for Students Conference (ASSC) serves as a networking and professional development opportunity for student services professionals throughout the province. Held annually in May, this event sees post-secondary student services professionals meet and discuss issues and strategies benefiting students. The Provincial Planning Committee maintains this website and works annually with the host institution’s site committee to plan an economical and beneficial event. Past conferences have drawn participants from across Canada and the Northwestern United States.

Conference Description

The annual conference is hosted by one or more of the provincial post-secondary institutions, past sessions have covered topics as diverse as personal safety, advising, suicide intervention, and leadership. These sessions are unique in that they are offered by colleagues who work alongside students on a daily basis.

Conference Goals

The goal of the annual conference is to develop professional relationships and friendships while enhancing the service we provide to students. Develop personally and professionally in a fun filled atmosphere that promotes informal networking coupled with amazing learning.

Legend of the Walking Stick

Each year, the conference On-Site Committee prepares the legend of the walking stick.

This legend involves the passing of the walking stick from host institution to host institution annually. The journeying professional traveler continues on a lifelong journey of discovery, carrying the stick from conference to conference.

In the best kept practices of oral tradition, the legend is shared after the Closing Keynote Speaker address.
